Australia at the UN
Australia is firmly committed to effective global cooperation, including through the United Nations (UN). We live in a complex, interconnected world where many of the challenges we face cannot be addressed by countries acting alone.
Australia is a founding member of the UN and has been an active participant since its establishment in 1945. Australia has served on the UN Security Council five times. Australia held the first Presidency of the Security Council in 1946. Australia is currently the 11th largest contributor to the UN regular budget, and our continued engagement aims to ensure the UN remains fit for purpose and able to deliver on the objectives and principles set out in the UN Charter.
International Peace and Security
Australia has been integrally involved in global efforts to build and restore peace for more than 75 years. Australia has provided personnel to 62 UN and other multilateral peace and security operations since 1947.
We remain a strong supporter of UN peacekeeping operations, the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
As a capable and dependable partner, Australian expertise is sought after in developing frameworks for promoting human rights, protecting the most vulnerable and preventing a return to conflict.
Australia has a long and distinguished record of working with partners to promote practical disarmament actions, strengthen global non-proliferation architecture and enhance arms control outcomes
Australia is committed to strengthening international law to prevent conflict and restore peace and security. Australia last served on the United Nations Security Council in 2013-14 and is running for a non-permanent seat for the 2029-30 term.

Human rights
Australia has an enduring commitment to human rights internationally and is a party to major human rights treaties. Australia was one of the eight countries that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, and remains a leading proponent of its consistent and comprehensive implementation.
Australia is Chair of the UN General Assembly Third Committee (Human Rights) for its 81st session.
Sustainable development
Australia supports implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and works through the United Nations to advance inclusive, resilient and sustainable development. Australia’s engagement focuses on practical cooperation and partnerships that support sustainable development outcomes in our region and globally.
