United Nations Third Committee: Australian statement at the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, Special Envoy,  and Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar

Statement delivered by Ms. Beth Delaney, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations

27 October 2026

Thank you Chair.

Australia strongly supports the work of the Special Envoy, the Special Rapporteur and the IIMM in documenting and responding to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

We are deeply concerned by the escalating conflict, human rights violations and abuses, and the worsening humanitarian crisis. We also remain deeply concerned by the plight of displaced Rohingya.

Civilians continue to bear the heaviest burden, and attacks on them must stop. We condemn the recent reported airstrike on a marketplace in Rakhine State, killing at least 50 people.

Australia supports accountability for atrocities in Myanmar. Ending impunity is essential to breaking cycles of violence and creating conditions for lasting peace and reconciliation.

Australia stands with the people of Myanmar and their aspirations for a sustainable resolution to the conflict.

We call for an immediate end to the violence, for safe and unhindered humanitarian access to deliver lifesaving assistance, and for the full implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.

Australia asks: What practical steps should the international community take to improve civilian protection and humanitarian access?
