The Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative: From Commitments to Delivery
MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia) Joint Statement
Friday, 24 April 2026
Thank you, President
I am pleased to deliver this statement on behalf of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia.
We would like to begin by noting that today marks the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, an occasion dedicated to reaffirming the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
This year’s commemoration coincides with this timely and important dialogue on ensuring the UN80 Initiative effectively supports the implementation of the Pact for the Future to strengthen the multilateral system to keep pace with evolving global challenges.
As MIKTA, we wish to use today’s dialogue to highlight three points.
First, we reaffirm our commitment to delivering a better future for people and the planet, as outlined in the Pact for the Future, and its annexes in all three pillars of the UN.
MIKTA countries are advancing concrete actions toward implementation of the Pact across its focus areas: sustainable development and financing for development; international peace and security; science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation; youth and future generations; and transforming global governance.
This includes on issues such as the eradication of poverty, climate action, zero waste initiatives, energy security, conflict prevention, the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel in armed conflict, mediation efforts, sustaining women, peace and security, meaningful participation of youth, cultural industry and creative economy, and promoting human rights.
In alignment with the Pact, we emphasize the necessity of bridging digital divides and ensuring fair, inclusive, equitable and affordable access to digital technologies, including through fostering multistakeholder discussions at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
Second, the Pact for the Future should serve as the guiding framework for UN80 reform efforts.
MIKTA members are strong supporters of the ambitious and system-wide reform efforts being delivered through the UN80 Initiative.
We, as MIKTA, emphasise that the collective political commitments made in the Pact must remain front-of-mind as we consider proposed reforms – in particular structural changes and programmatic realignments for a more agile, responsive and resilient United Nations.
This includes our renewed commitment to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls – an essential prerequisite for sustainable development – as we consider the potential agency merger of UN Women and UNFPA.
We must also ensure that the unique strengths, mandates and institutional memory of each entity are preserved, and the concerns of countries benefiting from the services of these entities are duly addressed.
Third, the UN80 Initiative should support more effective delivery of the Pact. This includes by:
- mainstreaming a culture of efficiency that reduces duplication and streamlines operations to strengthen the impact of the UN system’s activities
- fully implementing UNGA Resolution 80/251 on Mandate Creation, Implementation and Review; and
- pursuing structural changes and programmatic realignments that enhance outcomes where they are needed most.
Better system‑wide coherence can close gaps in the implementation of Pact commitments.
UN80 should also support stronger monitoring and reporting on the UN’s impact on the ground, informing the General Assembly’s review of Pact implementation in 2028.
President,
As MIKTA, we remain committed to working together with all Member States and stakeholders to effectively implement the Pact for the Future, advance the UN80 Initiative and, in doing so, ensure that the UN delivers for present and future generations.
Thank you
