INFORMAL BRIEFING BY BRAZIL AMBASSADOR ANDRÉ CORRÊA DO LAGO / COP30 PRESIDENT-DESIGNATE ON COP30 PRIORITIES AND PREPARATIONS
STATEMENT BY H.E. MS REBECCA BRYANT, AMBASSADOR AND CHARGÉ D'AFFAIRESOF AUSTRALIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
5 March 2025
Thank you, Mr President,
Congratulations, Ambassador, on your appointment as President-Designate of COP30 and for your update on priorities and preparations for COP30.
We welcome Brazil’s leadership on international climate action, including through your G20 Presidency last year, and look forward to joining you at the first Amazon COP later this year.
Australia shares your commitment to action on climate change.
We have legislated our emissions reduction targets of 43 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, and net zero by 2050.
This includes our ambitious renewable energy target of 82 percent.
We are working to develop our next NDC and policies to ensure we are on track to net-zero by 2050.
We know that climate change is the single greatest threat to the livelihoods, security and wellbeing in the Pacific – we are committed to playing our part in an effective global response that balances the net zero ambition with capacity challenges.
We look forward to working with you to build on the achievements of COP28 and COP29, including to respond to the clear calls for action from the Global Stocktake in 2023, and by bringing together the global financial community, including the private sector, to support the development of the Baku to Belem Roadmap.
We look forward to working with you to build global momentum for strong NDCs and initiatives necessary to ensure their timely implementation.
President-Designate,
We hope to work with you in the capacity of a future COP Presidency – as you know, Australia is bidding to host COP31 in 2026 in partnership with the Pacific.
We want to deliver a COP in partnership with the Pacific to bring profile to our region’s unique challenges, amplify the voices of small island developing states, and accelerate global action on climate.
We want to deliver a COP that highlights the economic opportunities in the net zero transition, through investment in infrastructure, agriculture, and energy; and that meaningfully raises the voices of Indigenous Peoples. We see an opportunity to explore how trade reform can contribute to climate change objectives.
And we want to deliver a COP that shows how, we can all choose to work together to create a better future for all.
President-Designate,
We wish you the best of luck as you lead us on the road to Belem. You have Australia as a committed partner in making COP30 a success.
Thank you.
